What is Phi Theta Kappa?Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the largest international honor society for students at community and technical colleges. Since its founding in 1918, PTK has inducted over 4.3 million members and is recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges. With a presence on nearly 1,300 campuses across 11 nations and approximately 250,000 active members, PTK provides opportunities for academic recognition, leadership development, and community engagement.

How do I join?Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is by invitation only. To qualify for our chapter, students must complete at least 12 credits of non-remedial coursework (1000 level or higher) at Normandale and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Eligible students receive an invitation at the start of each semester, along with details about orientation and how to proceed with membership. If you believe you meet the criteria but did not receive an invitation, feel free to reach out to us for assistance. Not a member yet? No problem! You can still participate in many of our events and activities.

What are the benefits of joining Phi Theta Kappa?Becoming a member of Phi Theta Kappa provides numerous valuable benefits. You gain access to exclusive Phi Theta Kappa scholarships and other perks. One of these perks is the Five Star Competitive Edge program, an online platform where you can develop essential "soft skills" such as public speaking, etiquette, and critical thinking at your own pace. Upon completion, you receive a certificate that you can include on your resume. Additionally, you’ll have access to PTK Connect, a comprehensive resource that helps you with your college and scholarship search, connecting you with schools that match your interests and identifying scholarships you can apply for. What scholarships are available to Phi Theta Kappa members?Phi Theta Kappa offers a range of scholarships to support members at various stages of their educational journey: Competitive Scholarships: These are awarded based on academic excellence and leadership skills. Notable examples include: Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise: Provides $1,000 to new PTK members to support educational expenses and leadership development. Hites Transfer Scholarship: Offers $7,500 to outstanding PTK members preparing to transfer to a senior institution. American Medical Student Association Scholarship: Grants $5,000 to PTK members pursuing a career in medicine. Each year, the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation distributes nearly $1 million in competitive scholarships. We encourage students to apply as soon as they accept membership and to update their applications at the start of each term. Need-Based Scholarships: For those facing financial hardships, PTK provides crucial aid through the Oberndorf Foundation. This emergency fund helps members overcome unexpected financial barriers to complete their degree. University Partner Scholarships: Over 800 four-year colleges and universities offer member-exclusive transfer scholarships. On average, these scholarships exceed $4,000 per year for up to two years. Many partner institutions also offer additional benefits like preferential admission and enhanced support for transfer students. What are the expectations for involvement? Do I need to attend meetings or complete service hours?Your level of involvement is entirely up to you. While there is no minimum requirement for service hours or meeting attendance, we strongly encourage you to take part in chapter activities to make the most of your membership. With seven different committees and two different project teams, there are plenty of ways to get involved that fit your interests and schedule. Whether you choose to participate actively or not, your membership is for life, and your Phi Theta Kappa status will always be recognized on your transcript.

What are committees?Committees within Phi Theta Kappa are specialized groups where members can engage in focused activities that enhance their skills and contribute to the chapter’s goals. Each committee has a unique focus, and members can join to align with their interests and strengths: Leadership: Develops leadership skills through training, projects, and seminars. Scholarship: Promotes academic excellence with workshops and scholarship support. Fellowship: Builds community and campus connections through social events. Service: Organizes volunteer activities to give back to the community. Finance: Oversees the chapter’s budget and financial planning. History & Recruitment: Manages historical records and recruits new members. Public Relations: Enhances chapter visibility with marketing and promotional efforts. Each committee is led by a student officer that is elected annually, ensuring a dynamic and student-driven approach to each area.

Do I have to be a member to attend committee meetings or participate in events?Not at all! We welcome everyone, including non-members, to attend our events and participate in committee meetings. Our PTK chapter is dedicated to enhancing the college experience for all students, regardless of membership. What if I cannot attend a committee meeting?If you’re unable to attend a committee meeting, don’t worry! Contact the Vice President to catch up on what you missed. This is also a great opportunity to connect with fellow committee members who can help keep you in the loop. For those who find it challenging to attend most meetings, discuss your situation with the Vice President. They can help you explore alternative ways to get involved or take on responsibilities that fit your schedule. This ensures you can still contribute and benefit from your committee experience. Is this part of the SCLA?No, Phi Theta Kappa is not affiliated with the Society for Collegiate Leadership & Achievement (SCLA). The SCLA is a separate organization with no physical presence at Normandale and operates independently from our chapter.
